IEC document 1390, A.1 Dynamic range phantom

Specifications:

It contains 22 steps of 10 mm of solid and cystic material.

The Box is measuring 30.5 cm * 28 cm * 10 (15) cm (w * h * d).

Weight is 8 kg.

Practice

The step, scanned through the low attenuation material, at which the echoes are just saturated in the image, should be noted. At the same depth as this step, the position in the scattering material where the echoes are just detectable should be noted, and the number of high attenuation steps through which the beam passed to reach this position counted. Using the known attenuation difference per step between the low and high attenuation material, the displayed dynamic range should be calculated. With a sector scanner, the ultrasonic transducer should be moved laterally to place the central line of the field-of-view perpendicular to the steps at which the just saturated and just detectable echoes are determined.

Maintenance:

·The surface must always be covered with 1/2 - 1 cm preservative fluid.  Fluid that disappears by desiccation

should be replaced by distilled water.

·The phantom will not stand frost. Safe storage temperature: 0 - 70 degrees Celsius.

·If air bubbles are trapped under the protective PP-plate a gentle pressure on the middle of the plate will make

the air slip out of small holes, which are drilled in the periphery of the phantom

Prescription for preservative fluid:

·906 ml Distilled Water

·94 ml Glycerol (85 %)

·2 g  NaBenzoat

·1 g  Na2EDTA
